The women of the US Soccer Team not only won the World Championship, but demonstrated the best values of what it means to be an American. The values of who we are as a people are often played out in the world of sports— from Jack Johnson to Muhammad Ali, to John Carlos and Tommie Smith, and many others. And now, the women athletes are in the forefront of that struggle for a just America. The US Women’s Soccer Team pushed for pay equity, social justice, gender equality, and LGBTQ rights, and refused to go to the White House but will instead— at least some of them— meet with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
