Autumn Valdes

Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University

At the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University, I was able to learn so much about the immigration policies and detention centers in New Jersey.

I had the chance to hear from local voices about the impact this was having on families in the community. I also learned about the attacks on press freedoms that were happening and how journalists were staying safe and protecting themselves.

I learned how to operate and edit on new software like Mailchimp, and post articles on Medium. One of my favorite parts was attending events like the Collaborative Journalism Summit in Philadelphia, helping to facilitate a workshop with Pro News Coaches, and learning more about local news ecosystems from local reporters in the area.

My internship advisor, Cassandra Etienne, really helped me grow as a writer and reporter. I loved being able to attend the center’s virtual press briefings with her, to hear voices in New Jersey who were interested in learning more about the policies in their area. It showed me the true importance of local news and independent media.

And lastly here’s a link to one of my articles I published on Medium: Read Autumn’s published article

During the school year I have agreed to continue working with the center, so I’m excited to keep you all updated on any more articles I am able to publish in the future!

Convergence Magazine

During my time as a PCIM intern for Convergence Magazine, I had the opportunity to collaborate with professionals to help write, edit, and produce a podcast; create clips for social media, and much more.

All while I was treated like a colleague and not like a college student.

Two of my best clips (excerpts from the Block & Build podcast) I made for Convergence’s social media accounts:

Two episodes of the podcast that I helped write for (headlines, intro, background research):

Jacob Gelman

Director’s Assistant to Matia Karrell

PCIM let me explore my passion for documentary filmmaking this summer, and I've emerged with new knowledge and experiences that I'm incredibly grateful for.

I worked as a Director’s Assistant for Matia Karrell, an Oscar-nominated director, where I learned firsthand the ins and outs of the organization and communication required to make a documentary. My abilities in researching, editing, and team communication have drastically improved thanks to this internship.

Eamon Corbo

Boston Neighborhood Network / Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism

This summer I had the opportunity to work for The Boston Neighborhood Network and the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism thanks to the Park Center for Independent Media.

I was able to build off the journalism skills I’ve learned at the Park School, while also getting new experience in television production and investigative journalism.

PCIM Sponsored Internship

Working in independent media with support from the Park Center for Independent Media has supported me cognitively, professionally and financially.

I was immersed in local journalism and was able to commit more time than I ever could have because I did not have to work as many hours outside of the internships.

Engaging in independent media alongside a cohort of other student journalists also fostered a space where I could build a lasting community and learn from others.

New Britain Progressive

Overall, interning at the New Britain Progressive was an amazing experience as it helped me to get involved in local communities in various ways such as helping to promote small businesses, writing about different events and festivals, and writing on more serious issues within the area.

It helped with communication skills with people who I am not familiar with while also allowing me to understand the importance of allowing people to get their voices out to the public and how this can help to solve different issues.
